What Happens During Your In-Home Shutter Consultation

Spencer Madsen

Before you choose what window covering to get, some companies, like Sunburst, recommend an in-home consultation. By bringing products to your home, we can show you how different window treatments would look with your decor. You’ll discover how natural it is to find the right window covering when you leave the sterile showroom.

But what happens during an in-home consultation? And how does bringing samples to your home enable you to better choose the perfect window treatment? Sunburst prides itself on these in-home consultations, and here’s what you will see at your appointment.

Stepping Through A Typical In-Home Shutters Consultation

People choosing between window treatment samples.

Begin by making an appointment by calling your local representative. If you already can picture the perfect coverings for you window, like our Polywood® plantation shutter, then we will make it a point to bring you a variety of options available for your preferred treatment. We will also offer additional treatments, so you can feel confident that your windows match your ideal.

After we come to your house, we’ll sit down and discuss what you are looking for in a window treatment. We’ll look at your lighting, privacy, and energy efficiency ideas, and we’ll pay special attention to hard-to-reach or specialty-shaped windows. Your rep will also inquire about how your windows are used and what aesthetic you want to acheive. The final objective is to imagine what your room will ultimately look like with the coverings installed.

That may require going through different samples and compare each style against each other. Most clients should look at a few different treatments, like comparing Polywood with our real-wood Ovation® shutters or picking the perfect stain to match the room. We’ll also find all the options available for the treatment, like available colors, louver sizes, or hidden tilt-rods.

Once you make your pick, we’ll find the exact measurements of your windows. We usually measure the windows in every room in your home—even if you only want to buy window treatments for a portion of the house. We get multiple measurements because most of our customers want to be able to order additional shutters or blinds with just a phone call. Before we leave, we will walk you through a detailed, written quote, so there are no hidden costs on your invoice.

Red Flags For A Poor In-Home Shutter Consultation

While we are convinced that Sunburst will perform professional in-home consultation, there are some actions you should never experience from any window treatment company. It should go without saying, the quality of the consultation mirrors the quality of the window treatments.

First, your salesperson should treat your home with respect. They should come to your house as scheduled, clean and presentable, and offer to protect your floors with shoe booties. Your rep should always give you product and company pamphlets and pricing information.

In regards to pricing, you should always get a complete written quote. Don’t accept a vague guess, scribbled on a product brochure or the back of a business card. And never accept pricing information without window measurement. You should always understand how much you should pay and why. Be sure to to look at references and online reviews.
